Every week, we look for interesting stories of cats and their owners. This time, we came across Elise from Baarn, the Netherlands. At Elise's home, her cat and dog have a great time together.

Bringing a cat and dog together can be exciting, especially when one of them is no longer a kitten or puppy as in Elise's case. Despite the big age difference, they even became friends within a few weeks of getting used to them.

‘Living like cat and dog’ - but in good harmony!

The well-known saying ‘living like cat and dog’, that cats and dogs would be sworn enemies is fortunately not the case with Elise. Her cat and dog live together in good harmony under one roof. That makes us happy! And also a little curious as to how she handled this....

Elise's cat's name is Harry, a 16-year-old British shorthair. Meanwhile, she also has a 1.5-year-old Dwarfkees and her name is Marie, but they also call her Marietje.

I was very excited when our little dog came, as Harry was naturally startled by our furry little puppy

A place of its own

Elise read up well beforehand and looked for and applied tips on the internet. Most importantly, she allowed them to get used to each other calmly at their own pace.

‘We gave our cat Harry extra attention during this time. It was important to me that the cat kept his own place where the dog did not come.’

The Cat Paradise scratching post is ideal for that, here Harry could retreat to different places whenever he wanted. Especially in the high lounge bed or in one of the hammocks, because of course Marietje can't reach this.

Sneaky kisses

Harry and Marie are often given treats at the same time and side by side, to encourage a mutual bond. Despite the big age difference and character, they were completely used to each other within a few weeks. According to Elise, this is partly because neither of them has had any unpleasant experiences with the other kind. They respect each other and each other's space. Sometimes one of them withdraws but often they seek each other out.

I sometimes even catch them standing nose-to-nose for a moment and kissing each other.
