Every week we search for interesting stories about cats and their owners. This week we spoke with Merel and Arie from Wernhout, The Netherlands (NL). Together they have two cats and a dog, and we found this combination at RHR Pets so beautiful that we naturally want to share it with our readers! This Christmas special will undoubtedly make you happy, so read on quickly about this particularly beautiful combination.

Walk through the park

From home, Merel knows that dogs and cats can live together just fine; she has actually had a dog along with several cats her whole life. Storm, the 12-year-old Cypriot tomcat, was already used to dogs because Merel's parents have a dog that Storm is already friends with. So when the couple decided to get a dog, she did not expect any trouble between the two. And so it happened, although a lively puppy was sometimes a bit too much for Storm, he kept him at a distance now and then and absolutely did not let himself be chased away.

Merel and Arie had thoroughly researched which breed would suit them well; in terms of character and appearance, they are completely taken with Indy, the Saarloos wolfdog who just turned 1 year old!

Since Indy has been with Merel and Arie, they naturally spend a lot of time outside, and Storm happily joins them. During a walk in the park near a landfill, a small kitten of about 8 weeks old came running up to them, meowing loudly. "The little kitten was not at all impressed by such a large wolfhound," Merel told us. Since then, Poppy, the black European shorthair, has become inseparable from Indy!

The big boss in the house

When we ask Merel who is the big boss in the house of the three, it turns out that it is actually not so big at all. "Storm is clearly the boss over Indy, Indy tries over Poppy, and Poppy... Well, she plays the boss over the whole house, including us," Merel says.

Because Poppy and Indy are both still young, they look for each other all day long. "They constantly follow each other, wrestle a lot, and love to terrorize the whole house whenever they get the chance," says Merel about little Poppy and big Indy. "After all that playing and wild behavior, when they take a rest, they prefer to do it together on the couch," she continues. Wherever Indy is, there is Poppy and vice versa. Merel never dared to dream that they would get along so well.

Maatjes, through thick and thin

That Storm sometimes prefers to keep a bit more to himself does not mean he does not belong. On the contrary, he prefers to eat together with Poppy, and he also goes along during Indy’s walks. During one of these walks, Indy was attacked by a smaller dog, but Storm did not let that happen and immediately scared it off! Some time later, Indy jumped in front of Storm between two cats to calm down a fight so that Storm could calmly walk home again. Merel is rightfully proud of her beautiful, sweet animals!
