Every week we look for interesting stories about cats and their owners. This time we spoke with Bernadett and Russell from Essex, England. When the couple decided to get a cat in 2021, it was Odin, named after the chief god of Norse mythology. And he lives up to his name; Bernadett and Russell have been completely at his service ever since!
Lockdown baby
During the lockdown in 2021, Bernadett and Russell decided to get a furbaby. For cat dad Russell, this was not his first furbaby. He had had several cats since he was young, but for Bernadett, this was her first cat, and their search for a kitten led them to a Maine Coon cattery. They made an appointment to see a black kitten. Upon arrival, they were accidentally shown a different kitten, and the couple fell in love instantly! And so Odin became their new furbaby.

The new boss in the house
Odin lives up to his name; he naturally has a divine appearance, and this powerful name suits him well. When Odin entered his new home, he immediately felt at ease and leisurely explored everything between cuddling and purring. However, after about a year, Bernadett and Russell noticed that Odin needed a friend so he wouldn't get bored.
Through Instagram, they got in touch with a breeder who had a perfect girlfriend for Odin! And now Amelia also enriches the lives of Odin, Bernadett, and Russell. Amelia, also called Millie, was a bit more sensitive at first. That's why they took it a bit easier with Millie, so she could get used to her new home at her own pace. But nowadays, Amelia is the boss in the house!

Happy family
Bernadett and Russell knew they had made the right choice by getting two Maine Coons. Odin and Amelia are like their babies, and although they would like more, for now it stays at two. Otherwise, it would mean the couple would have to sell their house to buy a bigger one to give the cats even more space. Maine Coons need room to move around comfortably, and Bernadett and Russell want to be able to give them that. In this setup, everyone is completely happy; they all love taking long naps, do a lot for a good snack, and are social, on their own terms. And best of all, the cuddles from their furbabies. Getting a big cuddle is a whole new level of happiness.

Good morning, human servant
Bernadett and Russell do know their place, because the cats know very well what they want. And they make this very clear! It starts in the morning, which is also why Bernadett and Russell don’t need an alarm clock. Every morning Odin wakes them up with loud shouting because he wants to eat! And if he doesn’t get it immediately? Then he raises the volume. By now he has also taught this to Amelia, so they can make a lot of noise together if their servants don’t provide food quickly enough! 😉
Of course, they also get a lot in return! When they go to work or come back from it, they always get a big hug. And also many funny moments… Odin can walk on his hind legs, but unfortunately they haven’t managed to capture this on camera yet. Bernadett and Russell call this “doing the scary/ het enge doen”. We keep an eye on Odin and Amelia’s Instagram page, because of course we also want to see this!
