You call his name. You look under the furniture. You go outside… nothing. And then your stomach drops: my cat is lost. This is the moment when you must act quickly and wisely. This week you will receive a clear step-by-step plan that you can easily use if your cat ever goes missing.
Step 1 — Stay calm no matter how difficult it is
We understand: you want to run, shout, and do everything at once to find your cat. But panic causes you to lose track.
Do this in the first 2 minutes:
- Check all over the house to see if your cat is really gone and not hiding somewhere
- Look in the usual places: cupboard, bed base, laundry basket, attic, behind curtains
- Listen carefully: sometimes you only hear a small meow
Also good to know: a frightened cat often remains completely still. So don’t think too quickly: “he is truly lost.”
Step 2 — Search wisely in the first 6 hours
Many people make the same mistake: they look too far. Most common mistake: walking a large circle too quickly. Most cats stay close at first.
They are often found:
- in the garden
- under a car
- in a shed
- under bushes
- at the neighbors (locked inside)
What often works as well:
- search within a radius of 50–100 meters
- check all places where a cat can hide
- visit the neighbors and ask if they:
○ want to check sheds/garages
○ can leave windows/gates open for a while
💡 Tip: especially search in the evening/night. Then it is quieter and cats dare to go outside more often.
Step 3 — Lure your cat back with scent, routine, or a familiar sound
Cats respond best to things that smell like home.
You can try the following:
- puts his litter box outside (smells strong and recognizable)
- place a worn T-shirt or small blanket outside
- try to lure your cat with the sound of his food
- speak softly and calmly (no hysterical shouting)
And yes: puts down his favorite kibbles, but watch out:
- it also attracts other cats
- prefers to have his food placed at the same set times he has grown used to
Step 4 — Report your cat as missing immediately
If your cat stays away for more than a few hours, it is time to act proactively and become active online.
Put your cat on:
- Amivedi
- Missing/found Facebook groups (your region/city)
- Nextdoor / neighborhood apps
Always also mention:
- chip number (if you have it)
- name / given name
- a clear photo (close-up)
- date + place of disappearance
- distinctive features (e.g. white paws, crooked ear)
💡 Tip: also make a second post with only: “CAT MISSING – [PLAATS]” as the title. That is what people click on.
If your cat is lost, you want one thing: to find it quickly. And the best way to do that is to stay calm and search wisely. Start close by, look at the right times, use scent and routine to lure it back, and report it missing immediately. The sooner you follow this step-by-step plan, the greater the chance your cat will be home again soon.

Doet me ontzettend goed! Ik ga en blijf nog steeds zoeken naar mijn knapste Toontje, zal dit nooit opgeven!
