You stumble into the house, sweating, heading straight for the fan... and there’s your cat, sprawled out on the floor, eyes half-closed. Cats can’t sweat like humans do, and the heat can quickly become too much. Especially for indoor cats or long-haired breeds like Maine Coons, overheating is a real risk.

1. Cat popsicles

Did you know you can easily make cat-friendly ice lollies at home? And no, not with whipped cream or chocolate (definitely a no-go). Think frozen cat milk or wet food in a silicone mould. The result? A refreshing treat that’s both safe and cooling.

2. Cool spots in the house are worth gold

Cats naturally seek the coolest spot in the house. But you can certainly help them with that.

Tips:

  • Keep curtains or shutters closed during the day
  • Keep doors open for air circulation
  • Let your cat lie on tile floors (think of the bathroom or hallway)
  • Turn on a fan
  • Place a wet, cold washcloth on their favorite spot

Extra tip:

A cooling mat for pets works ideally as a go-to spot in the house on hotdays.

3. Hydrate

Cats often drink too little, especially when they only eat kibble. But with a few clever tricks, you help your cat stay hydrated.

This is how you stimulate drinking:

  • Place multiple water bowls around the house (with fresh tap water)
  • Choose a water fountain (running water = more attractive)
  • Add a bit of cat milk to the water for some flavor
  • Give wet food more often instead of kibble

4. Ice cubes...

Some cats love playing with ice cubes. It is simple, cooling, and playful.

Ideas:

  • Move an ice cube over the floor and let your cat play with it.
  • Don't feel like having to wipe the floor dry? Then put the ice cube in a bowl of water

5. What you should not do

You mean well, but some things backfire in warm weather. 

What to avoid:

  • Spraying your cat with water (very stressful)
  • Rapid temperature changes (such as an ice-cold air conditioner directed straight at your cat)
  • Locking your cat in a warm room or in the balcony/garden
