Yep, catnip has a strange effect on cats. But where does such a reaction come from? And more importantly: should you spoil your cat with it or not? In this blog, you'll discover what catnip exactly is, why some cats love it, and how you can use it safely to make your cat happy.
Your cat suddenly starts rolling around and completely loses its mind over a simple little plant?

What is catnip actually?
Catnip (or "catnip") is a plant from the mint family. The active substance in it is called nepetalactone, and it triggers a euphoric reaction in many cats. It is somewhat similar to how certain smells evoke memories or emotions in us (only a bit more intense).
How it works:
- The scent of catnip is caused by certain pheromones that cats find extremely attractive.
- It affects their limbic system, the part of the brain that controls emotions and behavior.
- According to science, the effect of catnip on cats is roughly the same as ours after a glass of wine or a dopamine shot after a good laugh.
- The effect is temporary (about 10 to 15 minutes) and afterwards cats become temporarily insensitive to it.

It is not proven that catnip is harmful to your cat. But as with everything; everything in moderation
Not every cat reacts to catnip
About 30-40% of cats do not respond to catnip. That is due to their genes. So if your cat doesn't care for it, it's not the product's fault: your cat simply lacks the "catnip receptor".
Note:
- Kittens under 6 months usually do not respond to catnip.
- Older cats can also become less sensitive.
How to use catnip smartly
Catnip can offer more than just entertainment. It can also help with behavioral problems, stress, and learning desired behavior.
Useful applications:
- New cat tree? Sprinkle some catnip over it to make your cat curious.

- Stress during changes? Catnip can have a temporary relaxing effect.
- Stimulate play? Use it in combination with toys to keep your cat active.
⚠️Attention: use it in moderation. Frequent use leads to less effect.
Catnip= fun + function
Catnip is not a must, but for many cats it is a gift. It is safe, affordable, and can provide just that little extra fun or relaxation. Do you notice that your cat reacts to it? Then you have a wonderful tool at your disposal.

Een van mijn katten is er dol op. Kan eindeloos spelen met z’n speelgoedmuisje gevuld met wat kattenkruid.
