Every week, we look for interesting stories from cats and their owners. This time, we spoke to Karla from Sydney, Australia. Not only does she have four cats of her own, she also takes in other cats and kittens. So far, she has taken in 11 kittens and two adult cats. With her Facebook page called Kitties of Oz, she aims to help with useful info on all things cat-related.

Kitties of Oz

Her Facebook page is fairly new, but the page is filled with several interesting videos and tips. ‘I am a member of quite a few cat groups and I often see people asking for advice and information about different things related to cat and kitten behaviour, health, nutrition, toys, foster homes, ... So that's why I decided to make a page about it,’ Karla explains. ‘My goal is to fill this page with useful, educational, fun and, of course, cute content that will help people and their kittens.’

Mother and daughter

Her two cats Missy and Fluffy are mother and daughter. ‘Missy came to me as a stray cat and I started feeding her. After a while, she probably felt she could bring her three other kittens to me. I caught them all and took them to the vet. When they were all ready, I rehomed two of them and decided to keep Missy and Fluffy,’ Karla said.

Gift

Karla adopted Jasper just before Christmas and spent all her days off with her new kitten. ‘I wanted to adopt a kitten so I approached a few local cat shelters to see if they had any kittens available. Fortunately, they did. He showed me a picture of a little black kitten that had been dumped on the street the night before,’ Karla says.

I swore I wouldn't have any more cats...

Then she decided that three cats was enough. ‘I swore I wouldn't take any more cats...’ Karla always feeds an old stray cat who lives on her street. She prepares food for him and he comes over to eat every evening. Until one day she was sitting on her porch, having a cup of tea. She saw a little red cat running out of the bushes. He immediately started eating the food.

Finding his home

The first thing she did was call her housemate, as she could not catch the kitten alone. ‘He was very scared and started screaming at us,’ says Karla. ‘Fortunately, her housemate managed to catch it, so they brought him inside. ‘We walked through the streets to see if there was a mother cat or kittens around, nowhere to be found.... I posted photos of him on lost and found pages, but no one seemed to care, so I decided to take him to the vet so he could be scanned for a microchip, which in the end he did not have.’

Cat number four?

She had just convinced herself not to get any more cats... When she took in the little kitten, he immediately started purring and cuddling with her housemate. ‘He was definitely used to people,’ says Karla. Initially, she decided to get all his vet work in order and then find him a home, but Jasper had other ideas. ‘Jasper was obsessed with him! I had put the kitten in a big dog crate because I wanted to get him checked by the vet before he could socialise with other cats, but I just couldn't keep Jasper away from him. He slept on top of the crate and watched him all the time. They also talked to each other through the cage.’

Karla booked an appointment at the vet, put the little kitten in a carrier and walked out the door with him. ‘I felt so sorry for Jasper. When I left, he was sitting at the window meowing. He was devastated that I took his friend away,’ says Karla.

Jasper had a new kitten of his own

Karla

‘The kitten was declared healthy, but they told me I had to take care of him for another month because he was so small, so I took him home again. Once I got home, Jasper was so excited! I brought back his little kitten. I let them get acquainted and Jasper sniffed him everywhere, started washing him and they crawled into bed together. That was it, Jasper had a new kitten!’

Since Karla was so hesitant about having an extra cat in the house, she decided to name him cat number Zero!

Cuddles and scratching posts

Missy, Fluffy, Jasper, and Zero have two scratching posts, the Maine Coon Fantasy and
the Corner Coon.
Especially Jasper and Zero love to cuddle on top of it, or sleep in the
hammocks.
