Summer is just around the corner and you probably already see yourself loving to lie on a beach bed with a cocktail in your hand. But for many cat owners, it gnaws at them: the idea of leaving your beloved housemate behind, or that they miss you while you're on the other side of Europe. Fortunately, there are ways to make it as comfortable as possible for both of you. So you can truly relax, and your cat feels safe in your absence. In this blog, you'll discover which pet-sitting option suits you best, what to watch out for, and how to avoid worrying about your companion while you're on vacation.
Stay-at-home or guest? Which option suits your cat?
Not every cat is the same. One is calm and is fine with everything, while another hides as soon as someone unfamiliar enters. That is why it is important to choose the right form of sitting. We have highlighted three options for you so that you can make a conscious choice based on your cat's personality.
Option 1: A sitter at home
For cats that are strongly attached to their environment, this is often the best option.
Benefits:
- Your cat stays in its familiar environment
- Less stress
- Ideal if you have multiple cats
Tip: Choose someone your cat already knows, or have the sitter come by a few times before you go on your trip. This way, your cat builds trust with the sitter.
Option 2: A cat boarding house
Is your cat social and not afraid in a new environment? Then a boarding house might be suitable for him.
Pay attention to the following points:
- Always ask about the vaccination requirements
- How often do you play or cuddle with the cats?
- Can you come and have a look beforehand? This way you get a good impression of the atmosphere.
Option 3: Someone you know at your home
Think of a friend, neighbor, or family member who visits your home or even stays overnight. Make sure they receive clear instructions about food, playtime, the litter box, and any medications.
We understand: you know your cat is well cared for, but it still gnaws at you. That is completely normal. Still, there is good news: cats are more resilient than you think. Especially if you make the transition smooth.
This is how you make it easier for both of you:
-Ask for daily updates or photos
-Let your cat get used to the sitter before you leave
–Provide a cozy spot where your cat can retreat, such as a basket, blanket, or box.
Whether you choose a cat sitter at home, a boarding facility, or a friend: if you arrange it well, your cat will get through the summer just fine. And you will too, of course ;)
Last checklist before you leave
✅ Clear instructions for feeding, medication, playtime, and routines
✅ Contact details of the veterinarian
✅ Sufficient supplies (food, cat litter, toys, treats)
✅ Emergency contact person
✅ A quiet place for the cat (think of a blanket, basket, or cardboard box)
Whether your cat is a diva, a homebody, or an adventurer—with the right preparation and a sitter, you can go on vacation with peace of mind.
How do you arrange a sitter for your cat this summer?
