Every week we search for interesting stories about cats and their owners. This week we spoke with Chelsea from Vancouver Island in Canada. The happy family recently welcomed two Maine Coons into their home, Fig and Scout. Don't be mistaken, they are certainly not an ordinary family.
Adventurous children
When Chelsea first saw her Maine Coon Fig, it was love at first sight. “We picked her up on a boat and the first thing she did was put her paws on my cheeks and give me kisses! She kept cuddling me the whole trip home,” says Chelsea. Scout was also very happy when he met his new family for the first time. “There was a lot of purring involved. He has the loudest engine,” she says laughing.

Cat-friendly travels
Fig and Scout are raised in an adventurous family; the household loves to go out. “Since we brought them home, we always take them along on our outings. The children love it, my partner and I do too… And the cats are crazy about it as well! We visit various beaches, mountains, … I even take them in a stroller during my daily jog.”

As you can see on their Instagram, the cats are just as adventurous as their owners. The family also regularly travels to cat-friendly accommodations! Sounds perfect if you’ve always wanted to take your cat on a trip. “We have traveled a lot and stayed in many places, but that became more difficult since we had Fig and Scout. Fortunately, we noticed that quite a few hotels welcome cats. It’s so fun to take them along!” Chelsea explains.

Genetic mutation
Is there anything cuter than a pair of cat paws? Not really, no. Fig, Chelsea's oldest cat, was born with a few extra toes. "Fig is polydactyl, she has mitten paws," Chelsea explains. To be honest, the extra pair of toes only adds to the cuteness.
Polydactyly is a genetic mutation that is common in Maine Coons. The breed used to live in snowy conditions, which is why they have large, isolated paws that look like little built-in snow boots.

Cats with mitten paws are born with extra toes in the middle of the paw, making the paw look like a mitten.
It's not only cute, there are also some advantages associated with it. The extra pair of toes facilitates hunting and balancing on different surfaces. What big and wide paws can't do...
