Klaus is living his best life

Klaus is only 2 years old, and it shows in everything that his owners adore him. In conversation with Elena, we find out that he really has a personality and is very spoiled! "He is very smart, funny, and very expressive, he always makes funny and (especially) grumpy faces. Only when we clean his litter box does he get mean and run after us to bite us."

Klaus loves chilling on the balcony, watching cat videos on YouTube, and birdwatching by the window. Together with Klaus, they also enjoy going for walks outside in the forest or in the fields. They always take Klaus on vacation to the mountains… and especially the latter is very good for his health.

Our veterinarian said that cats never really recover from asthma…

Elena

In 2020, Elena increasingly noticed that Klaus got tired very quickly and that he was breathing too fast. "At first, we just thought it was because he is still young and loves to play and that he was fine..." But when it happened more and more often, Elena started to worry, so she made an appointment with the vet to check his blood, lungs, heart, and other organs because we didn’t know where the problem was.

After the visit to the veterinarian, he was diagnosed with feline asthma and severe allergies. Unfortunately, their vet said that cats can never really recover from asthma... "But we love Klaus so much, he is part of our family, so we do everything we can to improve his life. Among other things, through homeopathic herbal medicines and by taking good care of him, so he still has a peaceful and happy life!"

In the beginning, it was very difficult to deal with Klaus's asthma because they were still searching for which medicine would be best for Klaus. The diagnosis and its consequences drastically affected both Klaus's and Elena's lives. But especially Klaus's, Elena mentioned, because he was still small and had epileptic seizures every week, sometimes several times a week, which were very stressful for him. For Elena, it was terrible to witness; she then quit her job because she had to take Klaus to the vet almost daily for check-ups and to make sure he could breathe well. "Because of this, I was out of work for more than half a year to take care of Klaus at home and to further educate myself about asthma in cats."

Klaus has changed our lives for the better!

Meanwhile, Elena and her husband have completely adjusted their own lifestyle, avoiding certain things that are not good for Klaus's health. But also things that are not good for their own health! "Because of Klaus, my husband finally quit smoking after many years, a very big and difficult step for him, but the best choice for everyone. And I became more responsible - doing things and learning, I became braver - I was always afraid of cars and driving, but I overcame that fear because I had to take Klaus to the vet so often for treatments and check-ups."

Elena advises everyone who has a cat with the same health problems to first make an appointment with the veterinarian! Not every cat has the same symptoms, so it is better to have this checked by a professional vet for safety. If it does turn out to be asthma, Elena would like to share her tips to make it more tolerable for the cat;

  • Ensure a smoke-free environment
  • Use hypoallergenic detergents for clothing and bedding, etc.
  • You can buy an air purifier that cleans the air in the house
  • Get advice from the veterinarian for medication
  • Minimize stress as much as possible 🤍
  • Do not use scented candles or other strong perfumes
    in the house
  • Keep the house dust-free and air it several times a
    day
  • Consult the veterinarian to see if the cat needs a special
    diet

In addition to the above tips, Elena ensures that Klaus has a quiet place somewhere in the house. Because Klaus likes to sleep in the living room, she has placed his cat tree there. During the summer months, they often move it to the balcony so he can be outside and watch the birds.
