The changing of the seasons not only brings changes in the weather but also affects our feline friends. As cat owners, it is our responsibility to ensure the well-being of our furry four-legged companions throughout the year.
Let's take a look at how we can keep our cats happy and healthy all year round.
The Summer
In the summer, the sun and heat can be quite a challenge for our cat friends, especially for our cats with a thicker coat. It is therefore good to pay attention to a few things.
Here are 3 tips to keep your cat safe in the summer :)
- Hydration: Make sure there is always fresh water available, especially on hot days.
- Cooling & Shade: Create shady spots in and around your home and prevent your cat from lying in warm places in the sun. It is also very important that there is sufficient ventilation in the house.
- Travel & Vacations: If you plan to travel, arrange care for your cat in time or prepare your cat well for the trip if it is coming along.
Autumn
When you think of autumn, you might think of cooler weather and beautiful colors. But even in autumn, there are a number of things to watch out for with a cat.
- Leaves & Toxic Plants: Make sure your garden and home are free of toxic plants. If you don't know which plants are toxic, be sure to read our previous blog and ensure your cat does not play in piles of leaves. This can pose dangers.
- Comfortable and Cozy: Make the inside of the house cozy for your cat with soft blankets and some warmer sleeping spots since the temperatures are starting to drop.
As everyone knows, winter is the coldest month and it might even snow. It can sometimes be a challenge for cats to keep themselves warm. That’s why we have a few tips, so that even in the coldest months of the year your cat can still stay nice and warm without you having to turn the heating up super high.
- Indoor activities: Because of the cold, you will notice that your cat spends more time inside. Make sure your cat has enough distraction. This way the cat stays warm and can still burn off energy :)
- Warm spots: Make sure your cat has access to some warmer places where it can retreat. Think of a cat tree or a scratching post.
Besides the winter containing the coldest months, some also consider them the coziest months, think of Christmas. During Christmas, be careful with Christmas decorations and plants that can be harmful to your cat.
Spring
And then spring, the last season. During spring, the temperatures slowly but surely rise again. Often cats are outside more during these months because they have spent little time outside due to the cold. But here too, you need to take a few things into account.
Here are a few things to consider / could do to start spring off well!
- Flea & Tick Check: In spring, ticks become active. Make sure to thoroughly check your cat for these parasites. You can also give your cat a flea or tick treatment as a precaution.
- Garden Safety: Ensure the garden is safe. Consider a fence or a cat enclosure. Also, make sure there are no poisonous plants in the garden.
- The Spring Cleaning: Not only clean your own house well during spring cleaning, but also your cat's!
