On August 8th we celebrate worldwide International Cat Day: the day when cats finally get the recognition they've been demanding all year long. Whether you're a proud cat parent, crazy about cat videos, or just have a cat as a housemate: today they are officially celebrated.
Why does International Cat Day exist?
International Cat Day was created by the International Fund for Animal Welfare to raise awareness for the welfare of cats around the world. Because although your cat may be sleeping on a soft couch, there are also millions of cats living on the streets or being abused.

In short: today is not only a holiday, but also a moment to reflect on how we can help our cats (and especially street cats).
Did you know that cats were treated like real royalty in ancient Egypt?
They were allowed to live in palaces, were worshiped as gods, and sometimes even mummified. Well, if you have such a past, it is logical that they find it strange if they are not allowed to sleep on the kitchen counter.
How can you celebrate International Cat Day?
Whether you have an indoor cat who prefers to lie on the windowsill or an adventurer who likes to sniff around outside, here are a few things you can do to make today a little more special for your cat:
1. Spoil your cat with a gift
New cat snack? A new cat tree? Handmade cat toys? Or just a bigger portion of dry food tonight? Treat your cat to something that will really make him happy.
2. Adopt (or support) a cat in need
Think of the local shelter: maybe there is a cat waiting for you. Or support with a donation, volunteer work, or simply a sharing campaign.
3. Share your #CatContent
You love your cat (for sure), so why not proudly show off your furry friend as a proud cat owner? Post your favorite photo, share a picture of a funny moment on our Instagram, or tell the most beautiful moment you have experienced with your cat in our comments below. Don't forget the hashtag #InternationaleKattendag!
4. Make your home even more cat-friendly
Think of: beautiful resting places, cat wall furniture or a cool shady spot on the balcony. Be sure to check out our Pinterest for more inspiration!
5. Just give him some extra attention
Sometimes it is just: the simpler the better. Just lying together on the couch or cuddling your cat: sometimes your presence is often enough.
Are you going to spoil your cat today as well?
