The names Velar, Shelby, Niva and Hummer no doubt remind you of cars, but they are also the cats of Cattery Spoetnik. Since Sharon and her husband love cars, they chose to name their Maine Coons all after cars. Velar is the 2-year-old stud, who is a huge cuddler. ‘When Velar has a mating, he is a real gentleman. He gives kisses, lots of kisses. So we call him Mr Casanova’ Sharon tells us about Velar.

But she also reveals that keeping a stud is sometimes a challenge. The spraying, littering and the smell he brings with him. ‘The disadvantage is that he has to be separate from the rest, he has his own enclosure with large outdoor run and Velar can be loose in the garden’ Sharon explains.

Shelby is the real mother of the couple, who likes to keep
an overview from the top lounge berth of the Royalty
scratching post. When Hummer and Niva play, Shelby watches from a higher point.
Shelby has already given birth to a number of beautiful kittens, and Sharon is
also in contact with the new owners. "It's so nice to see how our babies
are doing and how beautiful they are becoming," says Sharon.

For Sharon, keeping a cattery is something special, the litters that arise give her so much energy and satisfaction. A small miracle what happens then, Sharon calls it. Most females retreat when they go into labour, Shelby who waits until the night and throws them in bed with Sharon. She also prefers to put her kittens on Sharon's lap.

But, what she will never forget was Shelby's first litter. Two of the four kittens were stillborn then, and were then buried in the garden under a Treurkat tree. ‘This tree has a lot of meaning for us’ explains Sharon.

Niva and Hummer are the youngest companions, Niva is 11 months and Hummer, the solid black Maine Coon, is now 5 months. From the first moment, Sharon was in love with Niva, but she was actually very scared in the beginning. They are now best friends and Niva follows Sharon everywhere. Wherever Sharon goes, whatever she does; Niva is there. When Sharon goes to fold the laundry, when she goes to cook, when she goes to make up.... That's where you'll find Niva, she just barely passes the mascara.
