Your cat doesn't know it, but... he officially has two holidays per year. Two days when he deserves even more attention (as if that were even possible). On August 8th, we celebrate International Cat Day, and on October 29th, the United States and the United Kingdom celebrate their own National Cat Day. But why two celebrations? In this blog, we dive into the history of both days and give you inspiration to celebrate them in the most fun ways.
National Cat Day – 29 October
National Cat Day was founded in 2005 in the United States by Colleen Paige, an animal lover who believed cats deserved more recognition. Her message was simple but powerful:
''Adopting one cat may not change the world, but for that cat, the world will change forever''
How to celebrate National Cat Day:
- Give your cat an extra cuddle (or three 😉)
- Surprise them with a new toy or scratching post
- Donate to a local animal shelter (even small contributions help!)
- Share a photo of your cat with #NationalCatDay and tag us at @rhr_pets
That way, you’re not only celebrating your cat: you’re helping other cats get one step closer to their forever home.
International Cat Day – 8 August
International Cat Day has been around a bit longer — since 2002, when it was created by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW).
This day isn’t just about cuddles and treats — it’s about awareness.
It reminds us of the importance of neutering, helping stray cats, and protecting felines all around the world.
💡 Both days have one thing in common: they remind us just how important cats are, and how much of their happiness depends on us.

On August 8th we celebrate worldwide International Cat Day: the day when cats finally get the recognition they've been demanding all year long. Whether you're a proud cat parent, crazy about cat videos, or just have a cat as a housemate: today they are officially celebrated.
Why we should celebrate too
Technically, there’s no official “National Cat Day” here in Europe. But let’s be honest — do you really need an excuse to spoil your cat?
Whether you’ve got a Maine Coon or a cheeky short-haired cat who steals your spot on the sofa, these days are a lovely reminder to appreciate the little things.
“A house with a cat never feels empty.”
So, mark 8 August and 29 October in your calendar, grab the treats, and spoil your cat in your own way.
Because one Cat Day is great but two? That’s pure happiness for them 💚
