Animal Shelter Heart of Brabant provides care and (re)homing of (stray) dogs and cats. They also operate the animal ambulance seven days a week to pick up injured animals and animals in need.

Dogs and cats are taken in at the animal shelter, and kittens go to foster homes to socialize before finding a new owner. Other animals besides dogs and cats are placed in specialized care centers.

Let me introduce ourselves! Who exactly are you and what do you do?

Animal Shelter Heart of Brabant is responsible for the care of stray animals in the region and surroundings of Tilburg.

We keep the (stray) animals in custody for 14 days
until the owner comes to pick up the animal. We ensure that within the first 14 days a veterinarian examines the animal, deworms, defleas, vaccinates, and performs a general check-up. If the animal is not picked up by the owner, any additional treatments will be scheduled after 14 days such as:

  • Dental cleaning
  • Castration or sterilization

If the animal needs immediate treatment, this will of course be started right away. After these 14 days, the animal comes out of quarantine and is transferred to another shelter where it is then made available for adoption.

A behavior test is conducted by the behavior specialist on the dogs to determine the best way to rehome the dog.

How many animals do you typically take in? More cats or more dogs?

This varies greatly. In general, you can assume that more animals are taken in during the summer period.

In the summer, many people are outside and we are more often approached about animals that are roaming free.

We take in more cats than dogs.

In what situation do you find the animals? What is their condition then?

These are really very different situations. They are
mainly animals found on the street, stray dogs, lost cats, or abandoned animals.

Of course, we can never say with certainty why we find these animals on the street. Often these animals are sick, weak, or in generally poor health.

With this poor health, we need to work to make the animal adoptable again.

Now some pawsitivity! How many animals are adopted after being taken in?

Very rarely, in the worst case, we have to make a choice to euthanize the animal due to medical reasons or behavioral problems. These animals can no longer be rehomed.

Almost always, all animals are adopted again. This is very nice for us but above all for the animals!
