First pet together

Both cats are ragdolls, but Luna is six months older than Lana. ‘We found an advert for Luna on the internet; she was our first pet together. I always had Maine Coons when I lived at home, but this was the first time my boyfriend and I bought a cat together,’ Lisette says. - Says Lisette. ‘We really wanted Luna to have a friend, so we went on Facebook to look for another ragdoll. Luckily, we found someone who had just had a litter.’

Where I go, they go

Luna and Lana got along pretty quickly, even if for a few days Luna didn't really realise what was going on. ‘She didn't really know what to do with Lana, but luckily they are now each other's best friend. They are inseparable,’ says Lisette.

Cats always feel it when I'm having a bad day

Not only are they best friends to each other, but they also mean the world to Lisette. ‘They are a big part of our lives. Luna and Lana also helped me through a very difficult time, they really sense when I'm having a bad day.’

The cats are always with her, wherever she goes, the cats go with her. ‘I can't even go to the toilet without them. Laundry also seems very interesting because they always want to be with me when I do laundry.’

Separation anxiety

Because they mean so much to them anyway, they also feel guilty when they have to leave home for a few days. It's not like no one cares for them, but still. ‘We replaced the windows, so of course the cats had to go somewhere else. Our friends looked after them. They had the whole attic to themselves! But Luna didn't like it at all, even though we visited every day. She even stopped eating!’ - says Lisette.

Unfortunately, this is something many cats have to deal with. Cats can also suffer from separation anxiety. Any small change in their routine can trigger this. Dogs show their discomfort by destroying furniture or whining, but cats may stop eating because they are uncomfortable.

Lisette

Lisette and her boyfriend had to look for an alternative because they were planning to go on holiday. ‘We started looking for places where cats were also welcome and finally found one in Austria. Last summer, we took our two cats for a fortnight and they didn't mind at all! We took them for walks and they seemed to have a great time, even though they were in a different environment.’

Home sweet home

Luna and Lana can enjoy their own Corner Coon next to the sofa. ‘He fits our interior perfectly. We had to buy a sturdy scratching post because the Ragdoll belongs to the big cat category. A cat scratching post should not break down after a year because the cats use it a lot,’ says Lisette. They plan to buy a new one soon. ‘Maybe a Chartreux will also be added so the cats have more places to scratch and sleep. ’

Growing up with cats

08.07.2022
Every week, we look for interesting stories of cats and their owners. This week, we spoke to Elize, who lives in the Netherlands with her husband Gerard and their daughter Lente. Elize and Gerard have always had cats, but after losing their cat Willem, she felt she would never take another cat into her home. ‘We lost our cat Willem because he was hit by a car. I felt like my heart couldn't take it, so I wasn't planning to get a new cat,’ Elize explains.
